This 8 inch tall vase was created using two methods: Multi-axis turning to create the twisted upper shape and Tangential Wedges (based on a August 2014 American Woodturner article by Robert J.G. Craig). The wedge slats were made from Zebrawood, Cherry and Curly Maple. They were stacked tangentially and then twisted during the gluing process to create the spiral twist. A multi-axis twist was turned on the upper section to match the spiral twist of the wedge slats. The bottom is maple and the upper ring is walnut. Upper and lower sections are separated from the middle section by thin plywood rings to counter the stresses between vertical and horizontal grain patterns. Finish is Watco oil buffed on the Beall system.
